A new, high-profile business partnership has taken over two popular existing bars and restaurants in downtown Wilmington. They’ve also launched a new concept – a high-end piano bar at the corner of Front and Dock streets.
Here’s what you need to know.
Clayton Gsell joined forces with coach Kevin Keatts when they learned they were both considering opening a piano bar near Wrightsville Beach. Keatts is the former basketball coach at University of North Carolina Wilmington and most recently led N.C. State University’s team to the Final Four in the 2024 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament this spring. Gsell is a local businessman who has opened and developed a number of concepts, including restaurants.
The pair have opened Tempo 33, a piano bar and cocktail lounge on the third floor of the Roudabush building that’s also home to YoSake and The Husk. Keatts and Gsell decided that downtown was the best location for what they had in mind, a unique and elevated bar. Look for lounge-style seating, intimate live music from singers and pianists, and a dressy casual vibe.

It’s at 33 S. Front St. in downtown Wilmington. The lounge can be accessed by stairs on Front Street or an elevator off Dock Street. As of Aug. 23, the bar is opening at 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
There's a selection of beer and wine, but spirits and cocktails are a focus. Options include a scotch flight, a Lavendar Paloma, a Cinnamon Churro dessert martini, a Cachaca Spritz and the Millions of Peaches bourbon cocktail made with Old Forrester 100 and peach bitters. The Nightcap mocktail is a mixture of hibiscus tea, lemon, lemongrass, lavender and a thyme-infused ice cube.
The food menu includes small plates and bar snacks, like charcuterie, hummus and shrimp cocktail. Popular nibbles include the Truffle Parm Popcorn and the Tres Amigos, or chips with salsa, guacamole and queso.

A popular bicycle business has turned 50 years old.
Jim Mincher opened Two Wheeler Dealer on Aug. 23, 1974, as a 24-year-old on Wrightsville Beach. He moved to Wilmington a year later where he rented a business at 4406 Wrightsville Ave.
In 1990, when land was available, Mincher built Two Wheeler Dealer just behind the rented space at 4408 Wrightsville Ave.
As for the name Two Wheeler Dealer, Mincher said he was looking through "Bicycling" magazine and saw one shop called Two Wheeler and another shop called Wheeler Dealer. So, he just put "Two Wheeler" and "Dealer" together.

"Because I am honest with customers and do whatever I can to make them happy," Mincher said. Making customers happy riding their bicycles has always been at the top of Mincher's list.
He loves to see everyday people just wanting a bike just to ride around the neighborhood.
"A bicycle puts a smile on your face," said Mincher.
Mincher has also been involved in the community in a lot of different ways.
"Mainly if you treat your customers right, they will keep coming back and tell their friends," Mincher said.
Mincher credits his success by being lucky enough to have the best employees anyone could ever ask for. The business has had more than 175 employees during its 50-year run and currently has six employees that have been at the business for over 20 years.
Mincher's sons, Jonathan and Dillon, have also worked with their dad for over 10 years and want to continue making it part of their life.
"It's a happy family," the elder Mincher said.
Jody Burke, Mincher's very first customer, still comes to the shop for his bicycle needs. "I even have the receipt, and the dollar bill he gave me," Mincher said.
"Everyone that works there is so knowledgeable, nice and friendly," Burke said. "They always make you feel welcome. There is a lot of inventory to choose from. Jim is such a very nice man."

Over the last 50 years, the business has lots of growth, added more employees, new buildings and plenty of new products.
The new building has a loft so Mincher can add to his collection of old bikes, which includes Schwinn, Western Auto, and Imperial.
"Bicycles are finally being looked at as a viable alternative means of transportation," Mincher said.
Two Wheeler Dealer sells cruisers, geared bikes, hybrid bikes, road bikes, mountain bikes, e-bikes, tricycles, bike clothing and all accessories. The business also has a complete repair shop and can repair almost any bicycle ever built.
The shop sells Jamis, Giant, and Trek brands, but the most popular bike is the Earth Cruiser. They also have custom-fit bicycles.
The most important "merchandise” we sell is our “human interaction with our customers,” Mincher said.
Mincher believes the future is bright for the business as fitness is becoming part of a person's everyday personal health. There are more bike paths being built. Bikes are being built to be comfortable, making it fun to ride a bike. And bicycles still need repairing.
As for the longtime owner's future with the business?
"I don't retire because I like going to work," Mincher said.

The premise is the same, turning to natural environments to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, improve mood, and even boost cognitive function. The healing powers of nature to combat depression and anxiety. The approach is simple yet profound. It can take place anywhere, as nature sprouts itself in the most unexpected places.
This academic year, I am working on a project with staff at North Carolina State University to develop a Campus Nature Rx program. The campus lies at the heart of our state’s capital city, but it boasts an abundance of greenspace for students to enjoy. The goal of this project is to guide students in how to use their campus to positively impact their mental and emotional health.
Many other campuses across the country are starting similar programs, with Cornell University leading the way in research and development. These university programs will build life-long skills for their students to address the pressures of a modern life.
We can adapt these lessons for our own face-paced lives, using our parks, green spaces, river walks and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, as ideal locations for embracing Nature Rx. Even apartment dwellers can embrace a bit of nature cultivation with a few containers of plants on their balcony or patio.
The act of being in nature encourages mindfulness, helping individuals focus on the present moment rather than ruminating on negative thoughts. The sights and sounds of nature; autumn leaves, humming insects, birdsong, the rhythmic crash of waves will soothe an overactive mind. Physical activity, such as hiking or gardening, further enhances this calming effect, releasing endorphins that naturally combat anxiety and depression while providing opportunities for physical exercise.
So, as we move into fall and are released from the grip of the summer heat, take part in one of the many outdoor events offered in the area, like yoga in the park, guided nature walks and beach cleanups. You will not only connect with nature but also each other.

“Good Bones” star Karen E. Laine is relishing her retirement—and appears to have no regrets about walking away from the business she once shared with estranged daughter and former co-star Mina Starsiak Hawk.
It has been five years since the 61-year-old decided to step back from Two Chicks and a Hammer, the renovations business she co-founded with Starsiak Hawk.
However, Laine’s professional life remained very much entangled with her daughter’s until 2023, when the duo announced the end of their hit HGTV series “Good Bones” amid rumors of a bitter rift between them.
Now, the mother and daughter have returned to the small screen in a new spinoff, titled “Good Bones: New Beginnings,” a limited three-part series that sees them going their separate ways to work on independent renovations for the first time.
And while Laine has not addressed speculation of a fallout with Starsiak Hawk, she was quick to gush about her newfound freedom as a retiree—and a solo project runner.
“I’ve been doing everything I want to do,” the renovations expert crows in her Aug. 21 episode of “New Beginnings.” “I’m not working for a paycheck anymore. I retired in 2019, and I can do anything I want.”
For Laine, “anything” really does mean “everything,” with the retiree admitting that she’s been spending her time on a variety of projects, from gardening to legalese.
“I’ve been doing some landscaping projects, I’ve been doing some lawyering,” she goes on. “Taking care of grandkids, that’s fun.”
Of course, Laine has also been spending a good amount of time renovating a rundown home in Wilmington, NC, where she has decided to retire to, after growing “tired of the winters” in her home state of Indiana.
That home is the subject of her episode of “New Beginnings,” in which she can be seen enlisting several of her former “Good Bones” co-stars—MJ Coyle, Cory Miller, and Austin Aynes—to help her with the plans for the beach home.
“This house is like one of our original ‘Good Bones’ houses: just wretched,” she jokes. “There’s part of this foundation that’s sitting on air.
“It needs a lot of love, but we can fix anything,” she says.
Laine’s undertaking certainly required plenty of work, with HGTV revealing ahead of the episode’s premiere: Laine “risked her retirement nest egg on a bungalow that requires more work than anticipated to become a beach oasis.”
Interestingly, Laine did not touch upon her so-called rift with her daughter during the HGTV show—and Starsiak Hawk did not appear in the episode whatsoever.
Instead, the 61-year-old mother of four was seen spending time with her son, Starsiak Hawk’s brother, CR Starsiak, and his children.
Laine has remained fairly tight-lipped about the distance between herself and her daughter, who has been much more open about her feelings on their strained relationship.
In October 2023, in the wake of the announcement about their show ending, Starsiak Hawk admitted that the pair were “not talking” and that they had not been in communication for “a long time.”
Speaking on her podcast, “Mina AF,” she also revealed that working together on the show had sparked greater tensions between them.
“My mom and I were in some of the most challenging places I felt we’ve been,” she confessed.
“It’s a cumulative situation from the time I can remember, when I was three, of things that have created the situation that we’re in now, and it’s incredibly hard to undo, particularly with someone who’s not actively in therapy or actively working on themselves,” she added.
