But Rolesville, ranked No. 10 and No. 8, respectively, scored on its first eight possessions of the game — gaining one of those possessions when it recovered a squib kickoff just seconds after the Rams had taken a 33-14 lead in the middle of the second quarter.
“If I’m being honest, I felt like yesterday we lost to Gibbons,” Rams coach Ranier Rackley said in reference to last year’s 28-21 Eastern N.C. 4A finals loss to Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons. “Our offseason drills have been, ‘How will you respond when adversity hits?’
“And we played with an edge tonight.”

Quarterback Braden Atkinson, a Mercer recruit, completed 22 of 31 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns as the Rams rolled up 591 yards of total offense with 26 first downs. Running back De’Von Thomas added 117 yards rushing and two touchdowns and four catches for 43 yards and another touchdown. And wide receiver Gavin Waddell caught nine passes for 165 yards and one touchdown.
“They’re a really experienced team,” first-year Butler coach Glenwood Ferebee said of Rolesville. “I knew they were physical and we didn’t match their physicality and made too many turnovers.”
It was the second meeting between the schools as Rolesville won 21-19 at home in the 2023 opener for both teams.
Each team entered the game with returning quarterbacks coming off big passing seasons — 3,701 yards with 46 touchdowns and four interceptions for Rolesville’s Braden Atkinson and 2,507 yards with 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions for Butler’s Zack Lawrence.

A Mississippi restaurant chain is making a North Carolina return in a big way.
Newk’s Eatery, based in Jackson, Mississippi, plans to open up to 30 stores across the state, and about 10 in the Charlotte area, CEO Frank Paci told The Charlotte Observer on Friday.
The restaurant chain’s goal is to identify a franchisee by next year and find locations in Charlotte, as well as Raleigh, Paci said. About 70% of Newk’s restaurants are franchise-owned, he said.
Each store typically hires up to 40 full- and part-time employees, Paci said.
Newk’s isn’t new to the Charlotte market, however. There were two Charlotte stores and one in Rock Hill until all three closed in 2019 “due to franchise issues,” Paci said.
But now is the time to expand again because of the solid growth and economy in North Carolina and Charlotte, Paci said.
Newk’s isn’t the first restaurant chain to make a Charlotte. Within a year of The Habit Burger Grill opening in Charlotte in 2019, it closed. But the California chargrilled burger joint has since opened six of 15 planned Charlotte-area stores since 2022.
Newk’s meals are prepared to-order with an open-view of the kitchen. The fast-casual restaurant menu includes sandwiches, salads, soups and pizza.
What sets Newk’s apart from competitors like McAlister’s Deli and Panera Bread, Paci said, is its evolving menu with items like salmon Ceasar salad, spicy shrimp pizza, and shrimp and avocado salad.
The menu also offers macaroni and cheese and desserts, including several cakes.
Since the pandemic, Newk’s has simplified prep processes, added in-store kiosks and table ordering, and offers catering.
Stores also are smaller with more diners now taking food to go or ordering through third-party vendors, Paci said.
Newk’s was founded in 2004 in Oxford, Mississippi.
Last year, FSC Franchise Co. in Tampa, Florida, purchased Newk’s. It’s the parent company of other fast-casual chains Beef ‘O’ Brady’s and The Brass Tap.
Newk’s is able to share resources with FSC for better purchasing power and efficiency, Paci said.
There are now 98 restaurants in 12 states. The closest Newk’s Eatery to Charlotte is about 155 miles away in Summerville, S.C., according to the company’s website.
Newk’s plans to grow to 150 stores over the next five years, Paci said.

A Charlotte movie theater is being sued by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for retaliation against a former employee who previously filed a discrimination charge.
A former Cinergy Entertainment Group Inc. worker in December re-applied to work at the Charlotte dine-in movie theater at 5336 Docia Crossing Road in Charlotte, according to the lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina.
But Cinergy refused to rehire her because “she filed a previous discrimination charge with the EEOC after being fired from a bartending job in 2022,” according to the lawsuit.
Employees are protected from workplace retaliation by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, according to the EEOC, the federal agency that enforces workplace discrimination laws.
Cinergy, based in Dallas, Texas, be opened its first North Carolina movie theater in March 2022 in Charlotte. The dine-in movie theater has 10 screens, recliner chairs with swivel tables, serving food and a full bar. The company has nine theaters in four states, mostly in Texas, according to the Cinergy’s website.
Cinergy officials did not respond to requests for comment.
The Cinergy Dine-In Cinemas’ employee was a bartender at the Charlotte theater from July through October 2022, according to the EEOC lawsuit.
About a week after the employee told the general manager she was pregnant, she was fired for “alleged policy violations,” the lawsuit states.
In March 2023, she filed a discrimination complaint against Cinergy with the EEOC.
In December 2023, she applied for an open bartender position at the Charlotte movie theater.
When she followed up about the status of her application, the general manager asked her if she had filed the EEOC discrimination charge, and said he would not give her a job, according to the lawsuit.
She was referred to Cinergy’s vice president, who told her she would not be re-hired because she had filed the discrimination charge and to never apply again, according to the EEOC’s lawsuit.
The previous discrimination charge did not progress to a lawsuit filing by the EEOC, and is not a complaint as part of this lawsuit, commission spokesman Victor Chen said.
It is unlawful to retaliate against applicants or employees for filing or being a witness in an EEOC charge, complaint, investigation or lawsuit, according to federal laws.
The EEOC is seeking back pay, compensatory and punitive damages for the employee, as well as injunctive relief to end any other ongoing retaliation.
“Employers cannot tolerate such conduct or allow managers to retaliate against employees for reporting discrimination or for engaging in protected activities,” Melinda Dugas, regional attorney for the EEOC’s Charlotte District, said in a statement.

A Charlotte-based retailer closed five stores in the second quarter, bringing its total closures to 12 this year, SEC filings show. The women’s clothing shop plans to close approximately 60 more stores by the end of the year.
A Cato spokesperson was not available for comment Thursday to disclose which stores it had closed or the number of employees impacted, but its earnings report shows the closings have helped cut costs amid continued sales struggles.
Its sales, general and administrative costs, which include rent, utilities, commissions and salaries, were down 5.5% from the previous year, giving the company some financial wiggle room.
“We continue to manage our SG&A expenses tightly in line with our current sales trend,” Cato Chairman and CEO John Cato said in a Thursday press release.
Cato has 1,166 stores in 31 states as of Aug. 3. That’s a 7 percent decrease from the same time a year ago.
The Charlotte company pins much of its 8 percent second-quarter sales decline on the store closures. Cato also credited its sales slump to decreased consumer discretionary spending.
The retailer’s net income is up just over 50% in the first half of this year compared with the first half of last year.

Weddington High School earned one of the biggest wins in school history Thursday at Bank of America Stadium in uptown Charlotte, taking down nationally ranked Providence Day, 13-7, in the Keep Pounding Classic.
The Warriors, No. 2 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll, won against the top-ranked team using one of the oldest formulas in football:
Run the ball and stop the run.
The win avenged a 52-32 loss to Providence Day in the 2022 season and handed the 2023 N.C. 4A public school state champ from Union County with a big win over the 2023 N.C. 4A private school state champions from Charlotte.
“The kids played hard for 48 minutes,” Weddington coach Andy Capone said. “The defense was outstanding. Our kids were ready to go. They were fired up. All week, we heard about giving up 52 to them two years ago. I made sure I reminded them about it pregame. It’s two years in the past and understand our defense is way better.”

Weddington ran for 156 yards and allowed 18. Thanks to that, the Warriors have now taken down another one of the Carolinas’ most dynastic teams.
Last season they beat S.C power Dutch Fork on the road and they also beat past N.C. state champions Butler, Independence, Greensboro Grimsley and Charlotte Catholic.
And Thursday, Weddington beat the best team of them all.
Providence Day has won the past three private school state championships and the past two Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 titles. The Chargers were the No. 1 ranked team in the Carolinas’ top 25 last season and was again at the start of this one.
That Carolinas’ poll ranks all of the top N.C. and S.C. teams together.
“It’s awesome,” junior running back Brody Anson said. “We always focus on making sure we win the first game, and we were able to do that.”
Anson had a game-high 151 yards rushing and he was forced into service when Weddington star and starter Nick Diamond broke his elbow on the first offense play of the game.
Anson’s running, and some efficient passing from new starting quarterback Gregory Fee, helped keep the Chargers’ potent offense off the field; and when Providence Day did get the ball, the Weddington defense — and a barrel of penalties — cost the Chargers dearly.
Providence Day had a touchdown called back by penalty and stopped drives often with a series of five-yarders for delay of game or illegal motion. The Chargers also lost their best receiver, Gordon Sellars, a four-star national recruit, in the first half after he suffered a helmet to helmet injury.
Sellars went to the hospital on a night when the Chargers were already not at full strength. Junior QB Zaid Lott, a UNC commit, was battling a right throwing shoulder injury, and star tailback Ian Cline was playing through a high ankle sprain that kept him out of last week’s 55-8 win over Trinity Christian.
So Providence Day, which had more than 600 yards offense last week, managed 132 yards passing and 150 yards total.
Credit Weddington’s defense — powered by four Power 4 recruits — with a lot of that.
“I thought our defense played well enough for us to win,” Grier said. “Our offense was terrible. There’s no other way to say it. That’s 100 percent on me. I run the offense. Just the number of pre-snap penalties, and lack of awareness, and just poor execution and dropped passes and missed throws and missed blocks. There’s nothing about our offense that felt like a typical Providence Day offense.”
In the second half, Weddington made the Chargers’ struggles worse, breaking a 7-7 tie with a 14-play, 80-yard drive, leaning heavy on that run game. The drive ended when Fee hit Jon Manley in the left corner of the end zone with 10:32 to play.
At the same time, the Warriors’ depth also appeared to wear on Providence Day, which started the second half with nine penalties on its first 18 plays. As the game wore on, the Chargers were shuffling players in on offense and defense, particularly on the lines.
In the end, though, it was just a Weddington kind of night.
“We did not play well enough to win,” Grier said.
▪ Celebrity captains for the game were Panthers left tackle Ickey Ekwonu, a former Providence Day star, and Thomas Davis, the former Panthers star. Davis is the father of Weddington linebacker Thomas Davis Jr.
▪ New NFL Hall of Famer Julius Peppers was at the game as well as Panthers’ QB Bryce Young.
▪ With about five minutes left in the first half, Weddington’s Kelson Tate was hit with a personal foul on Providence Day’s top receiver, Gordon Sellars. Sellars left the game after the hard hit.
▪ In the first half, Weddington dominated time of possession and the Warriors’ defensive line prevented Providence Day from mounting consistent offense. Weddington ran 42 offensive plays in the first half compared to 24 for Providence Day. The teams were tied at 7 at halftime.
In that first half, Weddington had 190 yards total offense, compared to 89 for Providence Day, including just 23 on the ground.
▪ Weddington star running back Nick Diamond suffered an elbow injury on his team’s first offensive play and coach Andy Capone expects him to be out several weeks. Anson, who split time on junior varsity last season, replaced him and ran 30 times for his 151 yards.
Aiden Harris, Weddington: The junior defensive lineman made a living in the Providence Day backfield and was a big reason the Warriors stopped the Chargers’ run game.
Kendre Harrison, Providence Day: The junior tight end made some terrific catches and played well on defense, too. He had a tough catch-and-run touchdown called back for a penalty in the third quarter. Harrison had six catches and a tackle on defense.
Gregory Fee, Weddington: A reserve last season, Fee came up big as a starter in a big game, tossing two touchdown passes. He finished 22 for 26 passing for 161 yards.
“I know (about) Georgia and Texas and Florida, but I think N.C. talent is up there with anybody. I really do.” — Capone, talking about how much talent was on display during his team’s game as well as Myers Park and Independence in the opening game of the double header at Bank of America.
