For the second time in eight days, the Eastern North Carolina county of Wilson is celebrating the promise of a new pharmaceutical facility.
Last week, the manufacturer of the cold and flu medicine Mucinex pledged to build a 290-worker factory in Wilson. And during an Economic Investment Committee meeting Tuesday, North Carolina awarded a separate incentive for a subsidiary of the pharmaceutical and consumer brand giant Johnson & Johnson to open a plant in the county 50 miles east of Raleigh.
Under its state agreement, Janssen Biotech has committed to creating 420 jobs at a drug substance factory in the city of Wilson. The company pledged to hire these workers between 2027 and 2031 at an average annual wage of at least $108,800. This is more than twice the county’s overall average wage. North Carolina does not announce projects’ median wages when awarding economic incentives.
Johnson & Johnson, Janseen’s parent company, agreed to invest $1 billion at the site by the end of 2028 — though the corporation says it will exceed its state incentive deal and ultimately invest $2 billion at the Wilson location. In addition to hiring 420 workers, Johnson & Johnson guaranteed it will retain 259 other positions it currently employs across the state.
If it meets these hiring and investment targets, Johnson & Johnson will be eligible to receive up to $13.6 million in payroll tax breaks through a state job development investment grant, or JDIG. North Carolina’s total incentives for the project could reach $30 million, including $13 million from the Golden LEAF Foundation, a nonprofit created in 1999 to help revitalize rural tobacco-dependent manufacturing hotbeds like Wilson.
Combined, the city and county of Wilson awarded Johnson & Johnson an additional incentive package worth up to $54 million over the course of the project.
With Tuesday’s announcement, Eastern North Carolina adds to its reputation for large-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing, as Johnson & Johnson seeks to join Thermo Fisher Scientific, Novo Nordisk, Grifols, Pfizer, and Catalent among biotech companies with major facilities in the region.
Access to labor, roadways, affordable utilities and abundant land has attracted employers to the cluster of counties east of the Triangle says Mark Phillips, who serves as vice president of statewide operations at the nonprofit North Carolina Biotechnology Center. Area stakeholders have branded the region between Wilson, Johnston, and Pitt counties the “Biopharma Crescent.”
Phillips said employees travel from more than 25 surrounding countries to work at some of these newer sites.
“They’re really drawing from these rural communities that may not offer this quality of job,” he said. “When people think manufacturing, typically, they think of a dirty setting in some cases, but these manufacturing jobs are clean jobs working in air conditioning and heating environments year round. It offers a really nice pay, but also the really nice benefits package to really assist these families.”

Former NC State linebacker Payton Wilson is just four games into his NFL career, but the linebacker has already impressed those inside the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise and around it.
The Athletic’s Dane Brugler named Wilson the linebacker runner-up on his early season All-Rookie team Wednesday. Wilson trailed Seattle Seahawks linebacker Tyrice Knight on Brugler’s list.
“Wilson has played at least 20 defensive snaps each game for the Steelers, including his first start Sunday,” Brugler wrote. “He isn’t ready for coverage responsibilities and will run himself into blocks at times, but his reaction speed and competitive toughness give him a real chance to carve out a full-time role as the season goes on.”
Wilson recorded a career-best six total tackles in the Steelers’ 27-24 loss to the Colts this past weekend, playing a season-best 37 defensive snaps in the contest.
The former Bednarik and Butkus Award winner last fall, Wilson has kept himself in the Steelers’ linebacker rotation with his standout play from the preseason and in practice. He was a third-round selection by Pittsburgh, but the linebacker appears he has quickly outplayed his 98th overall draft slot.
Wilson made quite the first impression in the preseason with 7 total tackles, including 5 solo stops, and a tackle for a loss against the Houston Texans on Aug. 9.
“He was active on defense, but I think it’s kind of reflective of the production we’ve seen from him in Latrobe,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters after Wilson’s preseason debut. “So, I don’t know that any of us are surprised by it. I thought it was a good start individually for him.”
Wilson seems to still have his elite work ethic — and it might have taken an even step further than when he had it in Raleigh.
“Him and I don’t usually discuss how well he performs,” Steelers linebackers coach Aaron Curry told 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh during the preseason. “We always discuss what he can do to take his game to the next level. … “We are still looking for ways to continue to take his game to the next level. He’s a coachable player that wants to be the best. I’m trying to do everything I can to help him achieve his goals.”
Wilson, who has appeared on the Steelers’ depth chart as the No. 2 left inside linebacker behind former Baltimore Ravens standout Patrick Queen, has stood out inside Pittsburgh’s defensive meeting rooms.
Queen, a former first-round pick out of LSU in 2020, raved about Wilson as he prepared for his first season in the NFL.
“Great impact. The guy could do everything,” Queen told Steelers.com about Wilson. “He’s an athletic freak. Just the things that he does and how well he communicates, and the want to be great is just rare to find in somebody that young. Just for him and the position he’s in to be able to come in and dominate, he realizes that. And he takes full advantage of it.”
Wilson has made 11 total tackles this regular season, including 7 solo stops. The linebacker boasts a 66.7 overall grade from Pro Football Focus this season, and he is coming off his season-best mark of 74.0 against the Colts.

Johnson & Johnson on Tuesday announced plans to build a $2 billion biologics manufacturing plant in Wilson, North Carolina, designed to bolster production for its cancer, immunology and neuroscience portfolios.
Once fully operational, the new facility will create 420 new jobs for full-time and highly skilled employees, according to the company. Construction work is expected to begin in the first half of 2025.
Dapo Ajayi, J&J’s vice president of Innovative Medicine Supply Chain, in a statement said that the new North Carolina manufacturing site will help the pharma “ensure a resilient supply chain for the future” and allow it to make sure that “our transformational medicines reliably and efficiently reach patients around the world.”
Tuesday’s investment is meant to help J&J meet the lofty goals that it has set for itself through the end of the decade. The pharma announced at an investor event in December 2023 that it aims to hit a compound annual growth rate of 5% to 7% between 2025 and 2030.
J&J has set the ambitious targets amid mounting challenges to its blockbuster immunotherapy Stelara—both from biosimilar entrants and pharmacy benefit managers. Last month, Cigna’s Evernorth Health Services announced that starting next year it will offer a Stelara biosimilar at $0 out-of-pocket. The biosimilar will be produced by the Evernorth-affiliate distributor Quallent Pharmaceuticals and will be dispensed through Cigna’s Accredo.
To help meet its growth goals, J&J is planning to launch 20 new medicines by 2030, as well as more than 50 product expansions. Of these, the company expects 10 assets to bring in at least $5 billion in peak year sales, while another 15 of these products have a potential of $1 billion to $5 billion.
J&J appears to be headed in the right direction. In its second-quarter earnings, announced in July 2024, the company reported 4.3% year-over-year growth with nearly $22.5 billion in sales. Stelara, despite market headwinds, grew 4.9% with Q2 revenue of $2.9 billion. The company also raised its full-year operational sales guidance to a range of $89.2 billion to $89.6 billion, citing the sales potential of its recently acquired medtech subsidiary Shockwave Medical.
To bolster its growth, J&J has also inked a couple of deals in recent months, which could help beef up its pipeline. In May 2024, the company acquired privately held biotech Proteologix for $850 million, gaining access to its pipeline of bispecific antibodies for atopic dermatitis. The same month, J&J inked a $1.25 billion contract for Numab Therapeutics’ bispecific antibody NM26, which is being developed for atopic dermatitis.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Gov. Roy Cooper announced on Tuesday that Johnson & Johnson will create 420 jobs in Wilson County.
The company said it will invest more than $2 billion in a new pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in the City of Wilson.
"We welcome this tremendous investment by Johnson & Johnson as they expand their global manufacturing footprint," said Cooper. "Life sciences leaders continue to select North Carolina because our world-class workforce will help the company successfully produce innovative medicines that will make a profound impact on our state and patients around the world."
New positions for the project will include analysts, engineers, microbiologists, scientists, specialists, managers and senior leaders, Cooper's office said.

Salaries will vary by position, but the average annual wage is $108,823, which exceeds the Wilson County average of $52,619.
These new jobs could create a potential payroll impact of more than $45.7 million for the region each year.

A Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) awarded to Janssen Biotech, Inc. (a subsidiary of J&J), will help aid the project, which was approved by the state's Economic Investment Committee earlier Tuesday.

On the same day that Johnson & Johnson confirmed layoffs at its home base in New Jersey, the company made waves with a major manufacturing announcement in Wilson, North Carolina.
J&J is planning to build a state-of-the-art biologics plant to provide supplies for treatments across the oncology, immunology and neuroscience treatment areas, J&J said in a Tuesday press release. Construction is slated to begin in the first half of 2025, and the site will have a workforce of 420 once fully operational.
The company's total investment in the site is expected to reach "more than $2 billion," according to J&J's release.
"We are investing in capacity and new technologies to enhance our industry leading capabilities and ensure a resilient supply chain for the future," Dapo Ajayi, J&J's vice president of innovative medicine supply chain, explained in the release. "North Carolina is an important hub for biopharmaceutical manufacturing and talent, and we are pleased to join this thriving life sciences ecosystem and become part of the Wilson community.”
At a Tuesday meeting of the state's Economic Investment Committee, officials approved a 12-year reimbursement grant worth nearly $13.7 million, according to a press release from North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper. The money is contingent on J&J meeting certain job creation and investment targets.
Over the 12-year span, the manufacturing site is expected to grow the state's economy by $2.3 billion, according to the release.
Wilson has been something of a growing biopharma hub as of late, with several large drugmakers setting up shop in the North Carolina city.
Just last week, over-the-counter medicine maker Reckitt announced a $145 million investment in its Mucinex manufacturing plant that will employ 289 people and grow the state’s economy by an estimated $1.9 billion over the course of a 12-year grant, according to a release.
J&J, too, has a production tie to North Carolina through a manufacturing suite it booked at Fujifilm Diosynth’s planned $2 billion plant in Holly Springs.
Elsewhere, the company spread its manufacturing footprint overseas earlier this year with a 580 million euro ($621.7 million) investment into its tablet production plant in Latina, Italy.
